My Toolbox
Yes, I’m not afraid to share. In fact this is more for the gear heads out there that want to know all the techy geeky information. This is just the core gear that you’ll either find on me or that I regularly use. And of course, my gear collection is always growing. I’ll try to remember to update this as it grows!
- Canon 5D – This is my main workhorse. This is a full frame sensor and the photos that come out of this thing are gorgeous! The new version of this is the 5D MkII which also does HD video. I see one of these in the near future.
- Canon 30D – This is the camera I started professionally with. This body is a 1.6x crop sensor but is a great all around camera. I’ll usually have a longer lens on like the 135mm or 70-200mm on this body to get some extra reach on the zoom.
- Canon 20D – My “Uh oh, the 5D AND 30D just died and I need to shoot now!” camera. The previous model of the 30D, it is well behaved sitting in my case ready to save me.
- Canon 35mm f/1.4L – My very first “L” lens. Holy cow! This has produced some AMAZING images. This lens is mainly on the 5D and used for a good majority of the time.
- Canon 85mm f/1.8 – While it’s not an “L” lens, this sucker puts out some great portraits! The bokeh and background separation on this lens is spectacular! Although I am eyeing the 85mm f/1.2L lens, I don’t think I’ll ever sell this one off.
- Canon 135mm f/2L – My latest “L” lens and also my new favorite. This bad boy has some buttery smooth bokeh and is tack sharp!
- Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 – This is a sought after Gen II model. While it’s a tad slow, it was my workhorse portrait lens prior to my “L” addiction. Great for ceremony shots.
- Canon 580EX II (x2) – These are the flashes you’ll see mounted on top of my 5D and 30D. I can also set them up as Master/Slave for some off camera flash fanciness.
- Sunpak 383 (x2) – Some really good quality flashes for the price. They’re now discontinued but if I could find more for a good deal, I’d scoop em up! These are for more off camera flash goodness. I usually use these to cross light a dance floor for some dramatic lighting.
- SanDisk Extreme III CF Cards – From 4gb to 8gb cards. I have not had any problems with these and they keep up with my current camera body lineup. Very reliable and they have a great warranty too!
- Boda Dry – No it’s not a fanny pack! I guess this would be considered my superhero utility belt. Always on me when I’m shooting, it holds everything I could possibly need on me at the time.
- Mountainsmith Correspondent – My toy hauler. This lugs all my gear in a nice FAA approved carry-on sized case. It comes with two modular cubes w/ dividers to store practically everything I need on a shoot, even my laptop and a couple light stands! Too bad it’s discontinued. Mountainsmith makes great non-camera specific bags that are durable and practical.
- Custom Hack Pro – Intel Quad Core 2.4ghz (OC’d to 3.0ghz) w/ 8gb DDR2 RAM, (6) hard drives, DVD-DL burner, Cooler Master Cosmos case, a ton of fans and running OS X Leopard 10.5.8. And yes it’s been running flawlessly for almost a year. This is where all the magic happens…
- MacBook – My on the go notebook. I’ll do some editing on the road with it but the majority of my editing is done on the HackPro.
